"Song Of The Sea" teaser scenes

video

The Saloons next feature film project,"Song Of The Sea",is in several stages of development- We made a teaser recently and here are two scenes I animated. Designs by Tomm Moore and compositing wizardry from Serge Umé's team at Digital Graphics.
Svend Rothmann and Sean Mc Carron also animated scenes on the teaser.BGs by Adrien Merigeau.Follow the production blog here. video

Paul Young,producer/actor/cartoonist/general cool bean is away in South Africa for a fortnight,so this week I'm filling in for his usual slot as cartoonist of the "Kilkenny People" newspaper.

"Secret Of Kells" graphic novels

The "Secret Of Kells" graphic novels by Tomm Moore are out! Here are two of the pages of Vol.2 I worked on recently.Tomm layed out the pages and Ray Forkan and myself then worked on the detailed stuff. Marie Thorhauge also did stellar work on the colours of the prequel part. The hardback cover is published by Glénat in France. All images are copyright of Glénat and Cartoon Saloon. Order it online!

Invest commercial

video

I recently animated this commercial about investvent in Northern Ireland. It was fun to work on because the character interacts with live-action elements.Concept and direction by Nora Twomey and cool compositing by Roxanne Burchartz.

A few sketches for a poem I want to turn into a short film sometime.

Brendan And The Secret Of Kells posing

Some more posing I made for "Brendan And The Secret Of Kells". So far,the movie will be released in France,Belgium, the Netherlands, and of course Ireland, where it will be distributed by Buena Vista. What a privilege it was and always is to work alongside the super-talented "Baz" Barry Reynolds, who was also responsible for a big part of the character posing.Oh,and he also drew a charicature of me in about 30 seconds and was spot on,as always.I just HAD to use it as my Avatar on this blog. Thanks,Baz!

Brendan And The Secret Of Kells

Some posing I made for "Brendan And The Secret Of Kells",the Cartoon Saloon's first feature film, directed and developed by Tomm Moore. We are all incredibly excited about it because it has been such a long journey to eventually arrive at this point where the film is about to be released.I animated on the original trailer in 2000,and 9 years later the finished movie will finally hit the silver screen! The making-of-blog is,of course, always worth checking out.

Peigín Leitir Móir

I made this illustration recently for a book of Irish songs and nursery rhymes called
"Peigín Leitir Móir" ,published by Futa Fata. Loads of other Cartoon Salooners also contributed to the book.

Temptation

The Dude

Here is a lipsync I animated for a laugh some time ago.The dialogue is taken from my favourite comedy,"The Big Lebowski".If the evenings in the studio become long and dark,Tomm and I sometimes quote that movie from back to front, and so can our recently added super-intern
Svend Andreas Rotmann Bonde. It's such a unique film because never before or after have the Coens-or anyone else for that matter-produced such a bizarre and wonderful piece of guerilla filmmaking. The character,"Melchior", is property of Filmax Animation,Madrid, and is from their movie "Los Reyes Magos",directed by Antonio Navarro. video

Pseudolove

There is a good book called "To Have Or To Be" by Erich Fromm. This chap knows what he is talking about. For some reason I felt that I wanted to add an extract of the text to the illustration.

Couch Potato

A few years back Tomm and I made a little short film slash clip: "Couch Potato".Tomm designed and directed and I animated it. It's a lose collection of short scenes starring a potato in different situations.I like it because it's kinda whacky and was great fun to animate.

No Sky,No Earth

I am digging up some old stuff here.Kinda like this illustration, because I can't really place it.

From Darkness

This is the opening scene of a short film I worked on:"From Darkness",directed by the amazingly talented and witty Nora Twomey.I love the mood of this film,it's like some sort of silent dream. It raked in quite a few awards,so Nora has plenty of doorstoppers at home now.

George W.Tumbleweed

This is the Cartoon Saloon Cowboy. His name is George W.Tumbleweed and was designed by the Saloon's Tomm Moore, director extraordinaire of "Brendan And The Secret Of Kells",the Cartoon Saloon's first feature film.I animated this little logo-sequence with good ol' Tumbleweed, was great fun.The outrageously talented Ross Stewart,Art Director on "Brendan And The Secret Of Kells",did some cool compositing stuff with the guns here.
